UCLA's Electron Losses and Fields Investigation (ELFIN) mission is a space weather mission using three scientific instruments in a 3U+ CubeSat form factor. The first of its type, ELFIN has provided for breakthroughs in our understanding of relativistic "killer" electrons through pitch angle resolved energetic particle measurements. Additionally, ELFIN-L, launched in 2016 is a collaboration between UCLA and Moscow State University.

Giving a platform to progressive thinking, the Grand Challenge initiative is launched, uniting UCLA's resources to tackle some of society’s most pressing issues. The first Grand Challenge was deemed 'Thriving in a Hotter Los Angeles' and was designed to turn Los Angeles into a global model for urban sustainability.

Years of research by UCLA physician Charles Sawyers culminates in the creation of a new drug to treat castration-resistant prostate cancer. Fellow UCLA chemist Michael Jung helps in the development of Enzalutamide, sold under the brand name Xtandi, and it is approved by the FDA in 2012.
